Computer software, or simply software, is that part of a computer system that
consists of encoded information or computer instructions. Software refers to
parts of the computer which do not have a material form, such as programs,
data, protocols, etc. When software is stored in hardware that cannot easily be
modified (such as BIOS ROM in an IBM PC compatible), it is sometimes called
"firmware" to indicate that it falls into an uncertain area somewhere
between hardware and software.
Software
is often divided into two categories.
Systems software includes the operating system and all the utilities
that enable the computer to function. Applications software includes programs
that do real work for users. For example, word processors, spreadsheets, and
database management systems fall under the category of applications software.

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made
available with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to
study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose.
Open-source software may be developed in a collaborative public manner.
Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-source development. Open
source software is software whose source code is available for modification or
enhancement by anyone.
The
open-source model, or collaborative development from multiple independent
sources, generates an increasingly more diverse scope of design perspective
than any one company is capable of developing and sustaining long term. A
report by the Standish Group (from 2008) states that adoption of open-source
software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to
consumers.

examples of Open Source Software

stored procedures)

Management: Plone (open source content management system), Knowledge Tree
